The Federal Trade Commission of the USA gives official recommendations and says that users have 5 ways to prevent their e-mail addresses from pick-up programs.

a. To cheat the pick-up programs by means of disguising your e-mail address.

To put in additional words to your address but make a note below and somewhere close to it that this or that word should be removed.

b. To use an independent display nick name in chat-forums.

For the online chat-forums one can use a nick name in no way connected with the e-mail address.

c. To create temporary e-mail addresses.

One can use the service of temporary addresses, creating thus separate e-mail addresses, letters from which will be sent to the constant mail-box. If one of the temporary e-mail addresses starts to be littered, you can easily liquidate this address without hurting your constant mail-box.

d. To use two e-mail addresses.
